A tense moment unfolded in the African bush when a hyena approached a young leopard cub, forcing the vulnerable youngster to scramble up a tree for safety while its mother moved in to defend it.
The sighting took place as the mother leopard and her cub were resting near the base of a tree. The calm was suddenly broken when a hyena appeared and began moving closer, clearly aware of the opportunity a lone cub might present. Hyenas are opportunistic predators and will not hesitate to test their luck when they sense weakness.
Reacting instantly, the leopard mother became highly alert, growling and positioning herself between the hyena and her cub. At the same time, the cub relied on instinct, quickly climbing the tree — one of the most effective escape strategies young leopards have when threatened on the ground.
The hyena lingered below, circling the tree and watching closely, but it was unable to reach the cub. With the mother leopard maintaining a strong defensive presence, the situation remained tense for several minutes before the hyena finally abandoned the attempt and retreated.
The encounter offered a powerful reminder of how quickly danger can appear in the wild, especially for young animals. It also highlighted the importance of trees as vital refuges for leopard cubs, as well as the fierce protective instincts of a mother determined to keep her offspring safe.
