A pride of lions thought they had found an opportunity when they approached a large herd of Cape buffalo. The lions moved carefully through the grass, hoping to separate one animal from the protective group.
But the buffalo quickly realized what was happening. Instead of running away, several adults turned toward the predators, lowered their heads, and began advancing together. Suddenly, the hunters were the ones being surrounded.
The lions quickly changed their strategy and retreated to safer ground. The encounter showed why Cape buffalo can turn the tables on predators when they stand together as a herd.
