Weak and Starving! Elephant With Shattered Jaw Rescued and Treated

A young elephant, just 4 to 5 years old, was found in agonizing condition after falling victim to a cruel jaw bomb. First noticed by a cattle herder, the elephant struggled to drink, with water spilling from its swollen, shattered mouth. Wildlife officials and veterinary doctors rushed to the scene, bringing medical supplies to help the skeletal, weak elephant that had been left unable to eat or drink.
The rescue team faced challenges sedating the frightened animal, which fled in fear before finally collapsing under sedation. Examination revealed devastating injuries: a broken jaw, severe swelling, and a damaged tongue. Despite the irreversible trauma, the veterinary team worked tirelessly, cleaning the infected wounds with saline, removing pus and debris, and applying povidone-iodine, medicinal powder, and healing gels. Essential medicines—antibiotics, painkillers, multivitamins, and anti-inflammatories—were also administered to ease its suffering. To restore strength, the elephant was given saline and energy-boosting fluids through a cannula inserted in its ear vein. While its future remains uncertain, the dedicated efforts of conservationists have given this baby elephant a fighting chance. Authorities continue to investigate the cruel practice of jaw bombs, vowing stricter protections for wildlife to prevent more innocent animals from enduring such brutal suffering.
