I often wonder how an elephant experiences such an event. Does it remember the fear before it fell? Does it sense a blank space in its memory where the pain once lived? Perhaps it notices that something has changed — the colour, the feeling — yet somehow knows that it’s getting better, and simply decides to keep going.
Maybe, for elephants, this is their version of our alien abduction stories — an incomprehensible interruption in life, half remembered, half imagined, but still deeply felt.
