In May 2016, a massive bull elephant was found suffering from a devastating cable snare wound that had cut deeply into his flesh. Snares, often set by poachers to catch bushmeat, can cause immense pain and life-threatening injuries when animals become trapped in them. This bull was in urgent need of help, his strength waning as the cruel wire tightened with every movement.
Thanks to the swift response of the DSWT/KWS Sky Vet initiative, a veterinary team was flown in to provide emergency treatment. The snare was carefully removed, and the wound was thoroughly cleaned and treated, giving the elephant a second chance at life. This rescue highlights both the dangers of human-wildlife conflict and the critical importance of rapid intervention efforts to protect Africa’s endangered giants.
