Favourite Memories of Bambi – Her First Sanctuary Bath

In honor of Bambi’s fifth “re-birthday” at the sanctuary, we look back at one of our favorite moments from her early days. When she first arrived in 2020, her keepers at the zoo had warned that she disliked water. It was suspected that this reluctance stemmed from a negative experience with another elephant, possibly linked to a fall or struggle in a pool they once shared. As a result, Bambi avoided water altogether, which left her with layers of dead skin covering her body—much like what we see today with Kenya.
This video captures the turning point: Bambi’s very first sanctuary shower. The relief on her face was unmistakable as she enjoyed the cool water washing over her body. Over the months that followed, with regular baths, scrub sessions, and tree-scratching, every bit of dead skin eventually disappeared. Today, her skin is healthy and glowing—sometimes sparkling clean, other times delightfully coated in mud, depending on her mood. This milestone marked not just a physical transformation, but the beginning of Bambi’s healing journey.
